Real Medicine Foundation in collaboration with the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) established a primary health clinic in Gulbella, Charsadda District of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, aiming to provide free health services at the unit for the Pakistan flood affectees.
This clinic was established in a record short period of time – 7 days – and was formally inaugurated by Dr. Rubina Mumtaz, Country Director, RMF Pakistan, on December 19, 2010. People of the area consider the establishment of the BHU a noble act on the part of the RMF/APPNA since health has always been one of the basic and the most important issues of the region. The facility treats an average of around 50 patients a day.
From December 15th, 2010 through January 30th, 2011, 1,897 patients were diagnosed and treated at the RMF- APPNA Basic Health Unit, Gulbella, 38% of these patients were males and 62% females. 7% of the all patients were children. 19 women came for antenatal visits, 86 women visited the clinic for OB/GYN problems, and 15 women came to receive advice on family planning.
The response of the community has been very positive. They appreciate the presence of a doctor and Lady Health Visitor (LHV) who handles female related diseases (maternal cases). There were few medical facilities available in the region only far from their homes
Being poor, people were unable to hire vehicles to get to the health centers. They perceive the establishment of the Basic Health Unit at their door steps as nothing less than a blessing. And the people are therefore very thankful to RMF and APPNA for the establishment of the facility.

“The world’s attention has long since moved on from the Pakistani flood story, but there are still more than 1 million people who remain displaced in Sindh alone, said U.N. humanitarian affairs chief Valerie Amos on Dec. 3 after touring the flood zone.”

Real Medicine Foundation in partnership with Google held another two day free Medical Camp for the Flood Victims of Pakistan on this past weekend of November 13 and 14, 2010 in Union Council Sardaryab, District Charsadda, KPK, Pakistan. The Medical Camp was inaugurated by Dr. Asghar (formerly senior team member of Save the Children) at UC Sardaryab, Charsadda. The patients were mostly women and children. A 10-member team of volunteers helped to facilitate the medical camp. This camp, as our previous free medical camps, was divided into various sections, such as registration counter, different specialist OPDs, pharmacy and patient waiting halls.
1,497 patients were treated on Saturday, November 13
Of these 3,606 patients
71% were female
The team consisted of 29 medical doctors (14 on Saturday & 15 on Sunday) representing a wide range of specialties; the final figures of specialized care made possible are as follows:
The RMF medical team will be able to follow these patients at the hospitals where they work.
For this camp, too, the response from the community was excellent. Local notables, Government officials, politicians and religious leaders also visited the camp and appreciated the great effort of RMF and Google.

This past Saturday September 25th and Sunday the 26th, Real Medicine Foundation held our third and fourth Free Medical Camps for Flood Victims in Aman Garh (Pabbi Tehsil), Nowshera District, Pakistan. This most recent outreach effort was very effective, treating over 4,600 patients in two days, and was made possible by a generous charitable grant by Google Inc. and other individual donations.
In total
Of these 4,656 patients
70% were female
Since the team consisted of 40 medical doctors (19 on Saturday & 21 on Sunday) representing a wide range of specialties, the final figures of specialized care made possible are as follows:
The response from the community was tremendous. Since this camp was registered and approved of by Government officials, politicians and religious leaders were grateful and appreciative. Patients arrived from more than 12 surrounding villages since the medical camp location we had chosen was strategically and centrally located.
There continues to be an enormous need to hold relief efforts like these all over Pakistan and we will continue to offer these medical camps as long as our funding allows.
