As the scale of the flooding in Pakistan is still sinking in, our Flood Relief Efforts continue with Free Medical Camps held in different villages and towns every weekend. We have so far treated over 20,000 patients at our camps and will continue this outreach as long as we are able.

The RMF/Google Free Medical Camp Projects are continuing with our fourth weekend passing successfully. After having camps in Union Council Aman Garh and Union Council Nisatta, RMF/Google returned to the Nowshehra district, to the village  of Pirpiai with our team of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and general volunteers as well as with medicines/medical supplies.

Our 7th and 8th RMF Flood Relief Medical Camps for the Flood Victims of Pakistan  were held on the weekend of October 9th and 10th, 2010 at the Government High School, Union Council in Pirpiai.

Dr. Rubina Mumtaz, RMF”s Country Director for Pakistan, formally inaugurated the 2-day Free Medical Camp along with the participating medical team. All the team members thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to serve provided to them by Google’s generosity. Dr. Rubina also visited various sections of the camp such as the registration counter, the different specialist OPDs, the pharmacy and the patients waiting in the halls. She met with all 23 doctors in their OPD sections one by one and discussed the morbidity trends in our camps.

2,509 patients were treated on Saturday, October 9, 2010

  • 1,703 patients were treated on Sunday, October 10, 2010
  • A total of 4,212 patients were treated in this 2-day Free Medical Camp

Of these 4,212 patients

76% were female

  • 24% were male
  • 21% were children below the age of 12

On day one, 23 medical doctors and on day two, 17 doctors from various specialties participated in our camps, the final figures of specialized care made possible through Google’s support are as follows:

  • 1,314 patients – General medical OPD cases, such as acute (bloody) diarrhea, cholera, malaria, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, headaches, general weakness. Of these patients,

278  presented with urinary tract infections

149  with malnutrition

189  with general body aches (not specifically to categorize according to WHO criteria)

97 patients – General surgery

  • 701 patients – Dermatology
  • 170 patients – Ophthalmology
  • 218 patients – ENT
  • 657 patients – Pediatrics (children below the age of 12)
  • 597 patients – Obstetrics/Gynecology
  • 113 patients – Orthopedics
  • 134 patients – Dentistry and oral hygiene
  • 211 patients presented with severe dehydration as result of i.e. diarrhea, suspected measles, suspected meningitis, tetanus, high fevers. These patients as well as all patients presenting with acute abdomen, burns, acute appendicitis, severe injuries and major infected wounds were referred to tertiary hospitals for follow up and advanced care.

The RMF medical team will be able to follow these patients at the hospitals where they work.

As always, the response from the community was excellent. Patients arrived from more than 5 surrounding villages as the camp is centrally located at the Government High School.

More than seven weeks since the beginning of the floods, and as we prepare to hold our third major Flood Relief Medical Camp in the city of Pabbi in the Nowshera district, it’s important to note how critical the situation remains in Pakistan.   We will be reporting next week on the results of our next relief camp this coming Sunday, and hope to continue expanding our relief efforts.

From CNN.com, this slideshow and brief article highlights:

  • Areas of Pakistan are still submerged in water, weeks after the first flooding happened
  • The UN and other organizations are calling for more help in aiding the estimated 20 million in need
  • The death toll is believed to surpass 1,700

Continuing with the coverage of the floods in Pakistan and what this means for our clinic in Balakot, I came across a good article from the New York Times that details why it is so important for Western Countries, the US in particular, to lend a helping hand to the people of Pakistan.

    NY Times article here

Time and time again, the poor and rural areas of a country like Pakistan are left behind infrastructure, economic development and health care, ,and with no one else offering a helping hand fundamentalist groups like the Taliban will always step in to fill this void.  Looking at the amount of resources the US has already committed to both Afghanistan and Iraq to combat extremism, it would be a tragedy to let this opportunity pass to aid these efforts and to improve our image in this part of the world.

Based on some of the comments in this article from officials in Washington, it sounds like this is understood, so we can only hope that these are more than promises, and that funding and resources arrives quickly.
