Real Medicine Foundation in partnership with Google held another two day free Medical Camp for the Flood Victims of Pakistan on this past weekend of November 13 and 14, 2010 in Union Council Sardaryab, District Charsadda, KPK, Pakistan. The Medical Camp was inaugurated by Dr. Asghar (formerly senior team member of Save the Children) at UC Sardaryab, Charsadda. The patients were mostly women and children. A 10-member team of volunteers helped to facilitate the medical camp. This camp, as our previous free medical camps, was divided into various sections, such as registration counter, different specialist OPDs, pharmacy and patient waiting halls.
1,497 patients were treated on Saturday, November 13
- 2,109 patients were treated on Sunday, November 14
- A total of 3,606 patients were treated in 2 days.
Of these 3,606 patients
71% were female
- 29% were male
- 19% were children below the age of 12
The team consisted of 29 medical doctors (14 on Saturday & 15 on Sunday) representing a wide range of specialties; the final figures of specialized care made possible are as follows:
- 880 patients – OPD/General Medical; of these patients
- 230 patients presented with Malnutrition
- 167 presented with Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
- 45 patients – General Surgery
- 676 patients – Dermatology
- 132 patients – Ophthalmology
- 187 patients – ENT
- 685 patients – Pediatrics (Children below the age of 12)
- 623 patients – Obstetrics/Gynecology
- 67 patients – Orthopedics
- 86 patients – Dentistry/Oral Hygiene
- 101 patients – miscellaneous, such as general body aches (not specifically to categorize according to WHO criteria)
- 124 patients were referred to tertiary hospitals for follow up and advanced care.
The RMF medical team will be able to follow these patients at the hospitals where they work.
For this camp, too, the response from the community was excellent. Local notables, Government officials, politicians and religious leaders also visited the camp and appreciated the great effort of RMF and Google.

From Google’s official blog yesterday, Google announced at the opening ceremonies of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) that they would be providing $1 million in charitable grants to support the relief efforts in Pakistan. The announcement mentions Real Medicine along with the 8 other non-profit organizations that Google has chosen to be partners in their first round of support. We again are very thankful and proud that Google has chosen us to be one of their partners in this ongoing relief effort in Pakistan.
As mentioned in Google’s blog:
“As part of our CGI commitment this year, Google is providing $1 million in charitable grants, as well as technology support to help the people of Pakistan recover from these floods. Roughly one-third of our grants support organizations providing clean water, shelter, medical care and other immediate needs, while two-thirds will be focused on longer-term rebuilding efforts. Partners for the first round of support include: A.S. Edhi International Foundation, Architects for Humanity, CARE, The Citizens Foundation, Naya Jeevan for Kids, Real Medicine Foundation, SIUT North America, Sungi Development Foundation and UM Healthcare Trust.”
“At the opening ceremony of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) this morning, President Clinton discussed the urgent need to help the people of Pakistan recover from widespread floods which have affected more people than the 2004 South Asia tsunami, the 2005 South Asia earthquake, and the Haiti earthquake combined. The floods have put one-fifth of the land underwater, impacting more than 20 million people, damaging or destroying 1.9 million homes, putting 3.5 million children at risk of waterborne diseases, and wiping out livestock and crops.
Unfortunately the global response has been anemic. While U.S. corporations, foundations and individuals responded admirably to the earthquake in Haiti by donating $900 million in the first five weeks after the disaster, that same group donated $25 million to Pakistan in the first five week weeks after the floods hit. In an interview with citizens hosted by YouTube, President Clinton called for a dramatically increased global response.”

We are very proud to announce that Real Medicine Foundation has received a grant from the Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund for our disaster relief efforts in response to the flooding in Pakistan.
Through the Tides Foundation, Google’s charitable fund manager, we received $25,000 directed towards the immediate funding of our medical camps treating the flood affected across Pakistan. We have so far held two of these medical outreach camps and have already treated thousands of patients. With this new funding we will be able to significantly increase the number of victims treated.
