Yesterday was the FOXGives Philanthropy Fair, an event designed to introduce the FOX community of employees to a handful of local non-profit organizations in the hope of spurring community outreach on a larger scale. The event is truly one of a kind and incredibly effective mainly due to the incredible drive to give that seems inherent in the FOX employee.

Volunteers met last year at the fair are still helping with our larger ongoing events even now a year later and a few have even stepped up to take the lead on some projects. To name just a few, Emmanuel Urbano has been helping to develop our Athletes for Real Medicine program, coordinating runners from FOX to run on behalf of Real Medicine in the 2010 LA Marathon and 5K (join us in 2011!); and Heather Hamilton  recently spearheaded our Big Sunday event, coordinating even more FOX employees to come paint walls, build shelves, and sort through toys and clothing for our LA outreach room at the Florence and Western clinic.

“It’s been incredible,” says Sarah Stern, RMF Director of Administrative Operations & Los Angeles Outreach Program Coordinator, “FOX as a corporation has consistently supported Real Medicine not only financially through matching gift programs, but through their tremendous volunteer support. Fox has given us some of the strongest and most amazing volunteers who have truly stepped up to help and who continue to do so.”

“It goes to show that FOX must be an incredibly nurturing, supporting company to work for based on the amount their employees give back,” she adds, “they work full times jobs and yet they continue to come back in their own time again and again to take on more and more. I know that I can count on them–when they say they are going to be there, they are going to be there.”

This year, what was even more touching was the number of people who came up asking about opportunities for their children to get involved as well. One woman approached us regarding her seven year old son who is “learning how to share.” So far she has made a tradition that her son donate his old toys to charity around Christmas to make room for new ones and she wanted to know if that was something that we could use. Right away, Sarah beamed and shared with her a story of how her teenage daughter Hannah Stern, RMF Youth Team, was forever changed after she saw a little girl at our Florence and Western clinic wearing some of her old clothes with pride. “She realized that the little girl was looking up to her, ” said Sarah, “since then Hannah regularly combs through her old clothing and toys selecting items for donation because she understand the effect it has.” Now, Hannah is a regular at the clinic who especially enjoys reading  to the children.

Like the FOX employees chomping at the bit to help, we cannot wait to see what new relationships develop from this years fair. We would like say thank you to all of the familiar faces to who stopped by to say hello (especially those who said they read our new Volunteer newsletter), to the new faces who came by, signed up, and joined the FOXGives force for Real Medicine and to all the other non-profits who came to help make the event so diverse.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the tireless dedication of Gerald Alcantar, Vice President, Diversity Development, Qiana Byrd, Employee Activities Coordinator, and Michelle De Armas, Program Coordinator  — Thank you!

Sign up to receive our Volunteer Newsletter here or contact Sarah@realmedicinefoundation.org directly to get involved.

Real Medicine’s team is headed to Jimaní on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

We have identified two hospitals our doctors and nurses are able to work out of. Jimaní is the border town most overwhelmed by severely injured Haitians seeking medical help. Our contacts on the ground are reporting that severely injured patients are arriving in containers, often 30-40 persons in one container. Many of them requiring amputations.

We are accepting more doctors and nurses, especially trauma/ortho surgeons/nurses and anesthesiologists.

We will continue to report from the ground. Thank you for your ongoing support making this possible.

Dionicess IV- Beer & Chocolate Tasting and Pairing

Real Medicine and Dionicess IV

Above the Law buy

On May 17th, a relaxing Sunday was paired with beer and chocolate, and decadence paired with non-profit donation at Louis Haiek’s SideBar in Glendale.

Another success for food writer and professor Gev Kazanchyan, Dionicess IV raised nearly $1,400 in donations for the Real Medicine Foundation. Featuring six beers donated by Stone Brewing Co. and eight gourmet chocolates donated by Mignon Chocolate, the afternoon was a feast of the senses.

The Bear on dvd

Broken into two different sessions, 1-3pm and 4-6pm, Dionicess IV attracted people from all over the city with a number of well-known food writers and press attending as well. While many guests were familiar with past events by Gev Kazanchyan, others came from out of the blue attracted simply by their love for beer and chocolate.

The Queen

Of course, regardless of what brought everyone to SideBar that Sunday–be it love of chocolate or love of charity–all were happy to have the opportunity to mix personal pleasure with international public health in a rare moment when dark beer and rich chocolate were truly guilt free. As Nate Sellergren of The Stone Brewing Company put it, “good beer, good chocolate, good cause… you can’t do any better than that!”

On behalf of The Real Medicine Foundation, I would like to thank all those who came together to make the event possible: The SideBar, Stone Brewing Co., Mignon Chocolate and jack-of-all-trades Gev Kazanchyan. RMF would also like to thank Harout Bursalyan, our event photographer, and the many writers and members of the press who have helped spread the word and tell our story.

Big Sunday, Big Success

This past weekend was Big Sunday and Real Medicine was at the Nuestra Clinica in Boyle Heights.

For the most part, the weekend went without a hitch. Like most events you spend 90% of the time worrying that it is going to fail, that no one is going to show up, that there wont be any food, that we wont be able to get everything finished, so in the end when people do show up, and there is food, and nearly everything gets finished, you are taken aback by how needless your fears were to begin with.

We had about fifteen people show up each day, some for both days and some who only came for one or the other. People came from a number of places to participate, three from FOX, some from Real Medicine, a group of high school students from Marymount and Taft high, and even a few people from the neighborhood who just happened to see the signs and want to help.

Saturday was mostly priming then painting the walls, staining cupboards and drawing stencils for painted detail above the doors and windows. Then Sunday we put the finishing touches on the walls, doors, and ceilings, and finished the detailed decorations above the windows and doors. We also started work on a rug that will be in the larger main room.

A special thanks to Nicole and her brother Brandon for coming in Sunday and helping to remove the glue from the floor! Much to everyone’s horror, when we ripped up the old rug instead of a nice layer of linoleum or hard wood we found a crazy patchwork of linoleum, hardwood, plywood, and who-knows-what-wood all covered with horrible sticky, stinky glue. So, while everyone else painted the walls and decorated a rug, Nicole and her brother did the dirty work of heat-gunning the glue and scraping it off with metal scrapers. Now, thanks to their hard work the floor is no longer as heartbreaking and is now on the road to being just as welcoming as the rest of the space.

By the end of the weekend the room looked completely different. With a fresh coat of lavender paint, it feels open and inviting and though there is still a lot to be done before it is up and running, you can already get a feel for what it is going to look like in the end.

September Dawn release

The first activities set to be held in the space will begin on May 30th with a Yoga class for children but before then we are already thinking of having another volunteer day for help with the rug and some more finishing touches.  We have already made arrangements for some of the high school kids to come back and help out again for more community service hours but if anyone else would like to come lend a hand please stay tuned as more information will be posted in the future.

We would also like to extend a very special thank you to those who surprised us all by getting up, unannounced to auction off their own personal goods and services on their own accord. Your spirit and generosity was heartwarming to say the least and we cannot thank you enough. It was so unexpected but proof non-the-less that Real Medicine moves people to do things bigger and better then themselves. It is people like you who come in at the last moment to save the day that has kept us going and helped us keep faith that what we are doing is the right thing to do.
