Little Madu is Growing Up (Sri Lanka)

madu11 madu13

When Madumekala was 2 she suffered a massive head injury left her pituitary gland unable to produce Growth Hormone.

Usually, children grow at a rate of about 5.1 cm (2 in) per year but in 2003, when Madu’s illness was discovered, at 9 years old she was only 99.5 cms tall, about the height of a healthy 3 year old.

Dr. Silva, who first realized Madu’s condition, predicted that without treatment, Madu would not only grow up to be an incredibly short adult, but an adult with a number of serious health issues.

The pituitary gland is called the master endocrine gland of the body because it controls function over other endocrine organs. Without the variety of hormones released by this gland, the body simply cannot function the same way: muscles in the heart and lungs go undeveloped, bones do not grow or regenerate, fats and proteins are not metabolized, even the immune system is severely impaired.

The worst of it all for someone so young, is growing up knowing that you are not like everyone else, knowing that there is something wrong and being powerless to do anything about it.

Treatment was imperative, but very much out of reach. With treatment costs at 8,000 Rs. per week and a family income of 2,000 Rs ($20) per month, Madu’s family was forced to collect from their community in the hope of making even the initial payments.

In 2005, their dreams to start treatment were washed away with Tsunami—or so they thought. After loosing everything, Madumekal’s Family moved to a temporary shelter at Kabul-Pura Flats, Seenimodara in Tangalle. It was here that Madu met Dr. Martina Fuchs of Real Medicine.

Touched by Madu and her family, in 2005 Dr. Fuchs decided to fund Madu’s hormone therapy through Ruhuna Medical College. A few months later, Madu began her treatment along with 5 other children from various parts of the Southern Region of Sri Lanka.

As of 2007, RMF also supplies Madu with a food parcel every month of milk powder, grains, red rice, fresh vegetables and fruit to ensure that her body has everything it needs to use the hormone treatment to its fullest potential.

Since she has begun the program, Madu has gone from an 11 year old with the bone age of a 3 year old, to a 12 year old with the bone age of an 8 year old, to a 15 year old with the bone age of a 10 year old. She has grown over 22 centimeters (8.7 in) and is beginning to feel more like the other girls in her class.

As our Country Director in Sri Lanka, Michael Lear wrote in 2008, “It is hard to put to put a price or value on the dignity, hope and possibility that this program has made available to these children. And I won’t even attempt to put into words what this program has meant to them. In the near future we’ll have posts from the children explain in their own words the impact of such support.”

This is the case in nearly every developing country and certainly in transitional economies where urbanization, modernization are well underway – complete with all the trappings of the western lifestyle – stress, pollution, compromised health, obesity –  more affectionately known as “progress”.   If ever there were an “elephant in the living room” this is it.

So obvious is the correlation between lifestyle choices associated with economic development and diseases of affluence (cancer diabetes, heart disease) that even the WHO has had to acknowledge it.  Just visit their website – check out their very recent reports and a new web structure and you can search countries by these ‘modern diseases,” They’ve made it easy to see that we are voluntarily killing ourselves world wide.

Here are some links to get you started:

Without bantering you to boredom any longer about the stats, – (they are out their in plain view – just take a look at the $1.5 trillion the US will spend on these three disease alone this year), I’d like to share with you a program we’ve introduced to shave about 20 years off the learning curve for Pakistan and Sri Lanka doctors about the correlation between diet and health, a topic not addressed in Medical School – until now.

Through the generous support of scholarships provided by the T. Colin Campbell Foundation, www.tcolincampell.org, Real Medicine has been able to provide access to leading edge information and research about Plant Based Nutrition as it pertains to healing and preventing chronic diseases of affluence.   Delivered through Cornell University’s  Ivy League Web Based Learning Institution – eCornell, Dr. Campbell’s 50 years of nutritional research is reaching half way around the world – and evening the playing field when it comes to addressing these conditions.

Where curative measures of costly and fall far short of addressing the issues, the solution needs to come through education and empowerment of the medical community to education the public about the benefits of whole plant based foods, especially in countries like Sri Lanka where fruits and vegetables grow in such abundance or in Africa where the lure of progress leads sadly to the abandonment of their land, its bounty and the true wealth and health it can provide.

Dr. Campbell’s course has been well received by our RMF counterparts in these countries who have just completed the first of three modules. Our overall program intent is to provide access to members of the leading medical colleges, hospitals and health ministries, conduct clinical trials and provide support for better public health education and sustainable organic agriculture.

“The No. 1 cause and cure of America’s [and the world's] health care crisis is right under your nose – it’s what you put in your mouth.”–D

r. T. Colin Campbell

Changes in lifestyle and eating habits, due to growing urbanization, are causing a surge in chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory complaints, and, of course, cancer, in developing countries.

Over the past ten years Sri Lanka has experienced economic growth that has lead to increased life expectancy, however, this progression is paralleled by a doubling in cancer cases throughout the country.

Lady Sings the Blues dvd Red Mist aka Freakdog movie full In developing countries like Sri Lanka where any medical care is scarce and often too expensive for most of the population, there is an important shift toward lifestyle change that focuses on prevention as a cure. In an effort to curb poor food choices and promote the importance of a healthy diet, Real Medicine has focused its efforts on Nutritional Education.

The Real Medicine Foundation, through scholarships provided Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s Foundation, has made Dr. Campbell’s Web Based Plant Based Nutrition Course through eCornell available to the staff at Sri Lanka’s National Cancer Institute.

Though this effort has begun in Sri Lanka, Real Medicines goal is to provide education in such cost effective, natural treatment interventions and preventive strategies to all of it’s clinics worldwide.
