Sorority Row movie download Makoko is a shantytown in Lagos State with an estimated population of 50,000 people. The majority live in wooden huts built on stilts sunk into the dark waters of the Lagos lagoon. Makoko waterside inhabitants are mainly fishermen, who go out to fish in the night and stay indoors during the day, while the women take the fish to sell in the market or to dry.
The maximum family income is about $50/month. The vast majority lives on less than $1 a day. The social infrastructure in Makoko is very poor. The mainland does not have good roads, the area lacks potable water and the waterside is devoid of a sewage disposal system. This results in high morbidity from malaria, diarrhea and other infectious diseases. To reduce the high morbidity and mortality, medical volunteers in conjunction with the Nigerian Red Cross organized a free clinic for children under the age of five years in 2001.
This clinic also provided care for the children in the motherless babies’ home being run by the Nigerian Red Cross in the area. The clinic was shut down the following year because of lack of support from other stakeholders.
Real Medicine Foundation is restoring this Free Clinic for Children in the Makoko Slum, Lagos, Nigeria, to provide free pediatric care services to the estimated 15,000 children under the age of 12 years (primary school age) in this Lagos slum.

Lwala is a village of approximately 1,500 people near Lake Victoria in western Kenya. Within an hour’s walk, approximately 3,000 additional people live in nearby villages accessible by dirt roads. The majority of the area residents are subsistence farmers. Poor physical infrastructure, including impassable roads during the rainy season, lack of electricity and lack of reliable drinking water, have helped to create a critical healthcare challenge in Lwala.

The Lwala Community Clinic opened on April 2, 2007. Over 100 patients showed up on the first day. The clinic has been seeing, on average, about 30 to 40 patients per day in April and March. The numbers in June were already up to 60 patients/day – ¾ of them children. A clinical officer, nurse, manager, secretary, nurse aid, room attendant, groundskeeper, and night watchman have been hired. With support from UNICEF and Kenya Expanded Programs on Immunization, the clinic hosted a Mother-Child Week from June 9 to 16, for pregnant women and children under five. Immunizations and Vitamin A will be administered. Real Medicine Foundation is supporting the logistics and sustainability of the clinic and is helping to establish an HIV testing, counseling and treatment project.
The daily stress of hunger, financial need, and an unsafe social environment puts thousands of children in the Skid Row area at increased risk for life-long physical and emotional illness. Many are physically and sexually abused, and all are exposed to violence, crime, and drug abuse on the streets where they live.
The teachers in their schools are mandated by law to report any cases of abuse or other emotional trauma. This reporting would result in the children receiving care or treatment from outside agencies and professionals, and is often the only hope they have for a safer, healthier life. However, teachers and school staff receive no training in how to identify psycho-trauma in children, how to encourage children to open up and share their

experiences, and how to offer supportive assistance and guidance. This huge gap in teacher training means thousands of children continue to live in a state of daily trauma, when in fact assistance is available that can literally save their lives. The Real Medicine Project L.A. was developed to fill this gap and provide teachers with the professional psycho-trauma training they need to support the emotional health of their students and themselves.

Starting in fall of 2006, Real Medicine Foundation has started to provide trainings for teachers to identify and support traumatized children, living in the poorest areas of Los Angeles. Many, many more are needed and lined up.

Encouraged by the success of our first microfinance project in Mlese Village (From our findings it is interesting to note that people in general did not want to accept a micro loan higher than between $10 and $80, since they fear they would not be able to pay back a bigger sum as that would be culturally shameful. RMF used this self-regulatory process and has had a 99% payback rate), we decided to start a second project in Birit Village, Wedi District, Earthquake Area in Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia, in cooperation with our partner organization in Indonesia, Yayasan KOMPIP. Birit is one of a hundred villages destroyed after the earthquake in Central Java.
More than 80% of the houses in this location were severely damaged. Social and economic infrastructures were destroyed and many people lost their jobs.
Mlese Village is an amalgamation of nineteen neighborhoods (RT) located ten kilometers or six miles from the mid-sized city of Klaten, Central Java. In the aftermath of the May 24, 2006 earthquake, forty-one villagers from Mlese were found dead. Over 99% of the village’s houses were either severely damaged or destroyed, making the per capita destruction worse than Banda Aceh’s in the 2004 tsunami. This past October, Real Medicine Foundation (RMF) issued a $10,800 grant to Yayasan KOMPIP (YK) to expand YK’s TRT or “community savings” project in Mlese Village, Central Java.

In March 2007, the grant had already directly impacted over 1,000 individuals and stimulated a multiyear process of economic growth that will actively fight poverty and redevelop the community, damaged in the May 2006 earthquake. In Mlese Village, the RMF grant has begun to serve as a direct catalyst to revitalizing the community and returning village members’ lives to normal.
Much progress has been made, but many thousands of villagers in dozens of neighboring communities are still waiting for assistance.

Our Real Medicine Team Whole Health Initiative to provide protocol enhancement trainings to physical therapists in Tangalle, Sri Lanka and serve out patient clinics was a tremendous success. Led by Michael Lear, the purpose of this initiative was to follow up last year’s program at Navajeevana as part of our commitment of ongoing training for physical therapists and assistants in cost effective, progressive treatment protocols such as The Trager® Approach for chronic and Post Traumatic Stress pain, spasticity, and neuromuscular disorders. We also provided clinical sessions for Navajeevana as well as for Real Medicine Foundation’s outpatient clinic at Yayawatta Village.

The goal of RMF’s Clinic in Yayawatta in southern Sri Lanka is to offer comprehensive treatment to the tsunami victims who have suffered physical, emotional, and economical hardship. Most of the families who have settled down in Yayawatta are refugees made homeless in the wake of the tsunami. The new Real Medicine Clinic at Yayawatta had opened its doors in October 2006 and has been blossoming ever since.
In May 2006, many families from Seenimodara, Kudawella, Mawella, and Moraketiara, who had lived in refugee camps until that time, moved into newly built houses at Yayawatta. Yayawatta is a housing scheme (95 Houses) which was constructed by International Service Partners,

At the clinic, patients are seen Tuesday through Thursday and upon request. We also provide house visits. Outreach programs in Maternal and Child Health as well as Hygiene have been initiated. Patients can be referred to the Base Hospital of Tangalle for further medical treatment.

buy Pillow Talk The progress that has been made at Tangalle Hospital is fantastic. It turned from a dilapidated and depressing facility into a ‘Type A’ Base Hospital. A massive increase of admissions, new doctors, and nurses has taken, and is taking place. Patients have new confidence and are using the hospital in unprecedented numbers.
RMF had received a high-pressure sterilizer from Direct Relief International for the Tangalle Hospital. Without it, performance of any surgeries had been impossible, and patients needing such surgeries had to be transferred to hospitals about 50km away.
Patients needing emergency care had to be transferred as well, and many of them succumbed to their injuries during this transfer. With the autoclave completing the upgrade of the brand-new operating theater in April 2007, the medical staff is now able to attend to all emergencies as well as perform surgeries, routine and emergency, under sterile conditions. Tens of thousands of patients in southern Sri Lanka can now receive state of the art medical and surgical care. Innumerable lives will be saved.
